Choosing UUID v4 and NanoID Parameters

Random identifiers are useful when uniqueness should not depend on a central sequence. UUID v4 provides a familiar fixed format, while NanoID lets you choose a compact length. The right choice depends on interoperability, database indexing, URL length, and the number of IDs you expect to generate.

UUID v4 favors interoperability

UUID v4 uses the standard 36-character textual form with hyphens and is widely recognized by databases, APIs, and programming languages. Choose it when compatibility is more important than shaving characters from the identifier.

NanoID trades length against collision margin

A shorter random ID is easier to display and use in URLs, but fewer random characters reduce the available identifier space. Keep a sufficiently long value for the expected volume and security context rather than choosing the shortest possible string.

Prefixes help humans but reduce neither collisions nor secrecy

Adding prefixes such as usr_ or ord_ can make IDs easier to recognize in logs. The prefix is descriptive text; uniqueness still comes from the random portion, and the ID should not be treated as a secret merely because it looks random.
