Converting Timestamps and Time Zones Safely

Timestamp errors usually come from confusing seconds with milliseconds or interpreting a wall-clock string in the wrong time zone. Convert the value, inspect the detected unit and base zone, then compare a known reference time before using the result in logs, APIs, or schedules.

Seconds and milliseconds differ by 1,000

A Unix timestamp in seconds is typically around ten digits today, while JavaScript-style milliseconds are around thirteen digits. Automatic detection is convenient, but verify the unit when importing IDs, database values, or historical data.

A timezone is not just a fixed offset

Named zones can change offset because of daylight-saving rules and historical transitions. Converting through a real IANA timezone such as America/New_York is safer than assuming a permanent UTC-5 offset.

Ambiguous local times need context

A string without an explicit offset or zone can be interpreted differently across systems. When exchanging timestamps between services, prefer an ISO 8601 value with Z or an explicit numeric offset and preserve the original source zone when relevant.
