Practical JSON and XML Formatting Guide

Formatting is useful only when the output matches the job: readable review, compact transfer, or syntax diagnosis. This tool handles JSON and XML locally in the browser, so the safest workflow is to validate structure first and only then format or minify the data.

Format for review, minify for transfer

Readable formatting adds indentation and line breaks so nested objects and elements are easier to inspect. Minification removes unnecessary whitespace for transport or storage. Minification does not compress the semantic data and should not be used as a substitute for gzip or another transport compression method.

Use syntax errors as a debugging signal

If formatting fails, inspect the first reported syntax problem instead of repeatedly changing indentation. In JSON, common causes are trailing commas, unquoted keys, single quotes, or an unfinished bracket. In XML, mismatched tags and invalid nesting are typical causes.

Choose JSON and XML intentionally

JSON is a compact data-interchange format built around objects, arrays, numbers, strings, booleans, and null. XML represents a document tree with elements and attributes. Converting visual indentation does not change those structural differences, so preserve the source format expected by the receiving system.
