Photo metadata can contain camera settings, timestamps, software information, orientation, and sometimes GPS coordinates. Removing EXIF is useful before sharing an image publicly, but metadata removal and visual redaction are different jobs: text, faces, addresses, or landmarks visible in the pixels remain visible.
Deleting EXIF can remove embedded GPS and camera information, but it cannot hide sensitive content that is actually visible in the picture. If a document, badge, face, house number, or location landmark appears in the image, redact or crop it separately before sharing.
To produce a clean output, browsers may decode and re-encode an image. JPEG quality settings can therefore affect file size and fine detail even when the main goal is metadata removal. Compare the output visually if the image is important.
Keeping the original format helps maintain workflow compatibility, but the cleaned file should still be treated as a newly generated image. If you need a forensic or archival original, store the untouched source separately and share only the cleaned copy.
