How to Verify Files with Hashes

A file hash is a fingerprint for exact bytes, not a judgment about whether a file is safe or trustworthy. The most useful workflow is to obtain an expected checksum from a trusted source, calculate the same algorithm locally, and compare the complete values without altering the file.

SHA-256 is the best general default

SHA-256 is widely used for download verification and provides a much stronger collision margin than MD5 or SHA-1. MD5 and SHA-1 remain useful when a vendor publishes only those legacy checksums, but they should not be chosen for new security-sensitive integrity schemes.

One-byte changes produce a different digest

Renaming a file does not change its hash, but changing the file contents does. Repacking an archive, changing metadata, line endings, or even one byte results in a different checksum, so a mismatch means the exact byte sequence differs from the expected source.

A matching hash proves identity, not safety

If a malicious file and its malicious checksum come from the same untrusted source, the values can still match perfectly. Use hashes to verify integrity against a checksum obtained through a trusted channel, not as a malware scanner.
